Description

A digital interpretation/recreation of a painting of Sandy Hook Lighthouse by Edward Moran - hand painted digitally with adaptations and additions to the original (therefore it is not an accurate "reproduction"). Moran's paintings are in the public domain. Many were printed as chromolithographs by publisher Louis Prang.

American Impressionist painter Edward Moran was born in Bolton, England in 1829 but emigrated to the U.S. when he was 15. After studying in Europe at the Royal Academy and the Paris Academy, he returned to the U.S., living in NYC. He was a successful and respected marine painter - in fact, he was considered one of the finest marine painters of his time. His seascapes, often focused on areas around New York harbor, are full of gorgeous sunset colors and blue-green seas.

On his return to the States, Moran began to experiment with luminism. "The use of filtered light, hazy brushwork, and the portrayal of mood over subject became a characteristic trait of Moran's throughout the 1870s" (Hecksher Museum of Art).


This is a hand-painted digital oil/impasto derivative work based primarily on one of Moran's paintings in the public domain. Painted on a Wacom tablet using a variety of painting programs and filters. While my adaptation and interpretation are copyright protected, the underlying artwork remains in the public domain available to other artists to reproduce or interpret.

A signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity is available for each canvas indicating title of the work, artist's name, date of creation, a thumbnail of the painting, the origin of original work if the painting is a derivative, the number of your print in the limited printing and a guarantee that the work will no longer be available to the public in a canvas format once 25 canvas prints are sold.
