Desiderata (Latin for "desired things") - the original poem by Max Ehrmann written in January 1927 was written for himself, he said, "Because it counsels those virtues I felt most in need of." Largely unknown in the author's lifetime, the text became widely known after its use in a devotional and after spoken-word recordings in 1971 and 1972.
Countless copies, posters, cards and reprints of the Desiderata have been sold since the court ruled the poem to be in the public domain, saying Ehrmann had forfeited copyright because he allowed a friend to distribute it without copyright notices.
I have chosen not to reprint the original. Instead, some years ago I wrote a poem called "Desiderata Redux" - which means Desiderata revisited. I wrote it for much the same reason Ehrmann expressed about the original. I felt that I needed to be reminded of the virtues that were important to my own personhood - my own integrity - and I think that some of those virtues and words of advice needed to be different than they were in 1927.
I hope you find some encouragement and inspiration in my poem included here on a background image in the public domain from Forest Wander.

A huge thank you to the groups/hosts listed in the description to the right for featuring this image - I'm deeply honored. My apologies too to Jordan and Darren for not being able to offer this piece as a greeting card - there is so much text that it's unreadable on a card. To everyone else who has come by in recent days to leave a lovely note - it is my goal this weekend to catch up with all of you who have been so kind and to visit your work to say a personal thank you!
