Description
Digitally hand painted based on an original lithograph called "Midnight Racing on the Mississippi River" - an 1890 print of steamboats racing by Currier and Ives. This print is in the Library of Congress and in the public domain. I own the copyright to THIS recreation/interpretation while the underlying image remains in the public domain. I chose to paint this in more vibrant colors than the 125 year old print indicates and to alter some of the background detail. Online versions of this and other Currier and Ives prints are generally too small to reproduce but can serve as adequate reference images.
From Wikipedia:
Currier and Ives was a successful American printmaking firm headed by Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824-1895). Based in New York City from 1834-1907, the prolific firm produced prints from paintings by fine artists as black and white lithographs that were hand colored. Lithographic prints could be reproduced quickly and purchased inexpensively, and the firm called itself "the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints" and advertised its lithographs as "colored engravings for the people."
The name Currier & Ives first appeared in 1857, when Currier invited James Merritt Ives (1824-95), his company's bookkeeper and accountant, to become his partner. The two were very distantly connected by marriage. Nathaniel Currier soon noticed Ives's dedication to his business and his artistic knowledge and insight into what the public wanted. The younger man quickly became the general manager and also helped Currier interview potential artists and craftsmen. The younger man had a flair for gauging popular interests and aided in selecting the images the firm would publish and expanding the firm's range to include political satire, and sentimental scenes such as sleigh rides in the country and steamboat races. In 1857, Currier made Ives a full partner.

This painting, as with most of my digital paintings, is an ORIGINAL work of art created entirely on a Wacom tablet using a number of different painting programs and various genres of painting styles overlaid upon each other, much the same as the old printing process of chromolithography. In this case, the reference image is a print in the public domain and in the Library of Congress collection.
Because the final creations are entirely digital in nature they are considered to be original art work, not reproductions. According to the International Association of Fine Art Digital Print Makers (IAFADP), "An original digital print is not based upon using original artwork outside of the computer. The artist may use elements as source materials, such as photographs, drawings or other appropriated images (those in the public domain), but THE FINAL FORM OF THE WORK EXISTS ONLY IN THE COMPUTER AND AS THE FINAL PRINT OR AS AN EDITION OF PRINTS."
Please contact the artist, Lianne Schneider, directly if you purchase this image as a giclee print on canvas, framed or unframed. A signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity is available for each canvas indicating title of the work, my name, date of creation, a thumbnail of the painting, the origin of original work if the painting is a derivative, the number of your print in the limited printing and a guarantee that the work will no longer be available to the public in a canvas format once a total of 25 canvas prints are sold from all potential vendors.

Thank you for your support and lovely comments Jack and Mona. It means a great deal to me. To everyone else who has left comments on any of my works in recent weeks, as soon as I am physically able and out of the hospital, (several weeks to go), I shall come and thank you each personally on one your beautiful works of art. In the meantime please know that I cherish each and every comment. They brighten my days and lift my spirits and remind that there is so much beauty everywhere and I'm confident that the Lord give me length of days to get back to my art and share what I think is beautiful - I admit to having an eclectic sense of what that might be in my own work. Thank you so much xoxox
