Description

Translation - I love you very much or I love you a lot. The French phrase was part of the title of a hit song by 50s crooner Nat King Cole. It had been written by Anna Sosenko in 1935 and was introduced in a film called "Love and Hisses" by singer Hildegarde. Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup topped the pop charts (peaking at #7) in 1955, cleverly interspersing French and English phrases in such a way that even non-French speakers could figure out what the lyrics meant. However, no truly romantic Frenchman would use the formal "je vous aime" (second person plural) to tell his beloved that he loves her a lot - he'd say, "Ma cherie, je t'aime beaucoup" - the more informal and more intimate second person singular.
