Description
This digitally hand-painted scene is the result of collaboration between Anne Lacy and myself. With permission, I referenced a small, low resolution image of Hamlin Lake that Anne had posted on Facebook and with which I completely fell in love. She graciously allowed me to paint from that image, using a little artistic license with regard to color - though the original really needed no enhancement.
From Wikipedia:
Ludington State Park is a state park located just north of Ludington, Michigan between the shores of Lake Michigan and Hamlin Lake, an artificial lake created by the backup of the Big Sable River by the Hamlin Lake Dam. The lake, which covers 4,990 acres, is five miles long and two miles wide. It has two sections, the upper and lower lakes, which are separated by the narrows. The lake's popularity as a summer resort spot is increased by the fact that the water is much warmer than Lake Michigan.
From the Hamlin Lake website http://www.hamlinlake.com/
Hamlin Lake is an extremely popular summer resort and recreation area because of its sandy beaches and dunes, warm water and well-groomed hiking paths. Along the miles of beaches, a visitor would find concession stands, picnic areas and restrooms and places to rent a canoe for a paddle along the shoreline. Boating, tubing and fishing are also very popular summer activities and Hamlin Lake Dam (which is what originally created the lake) is excellent for salmon fishing in particular. The lake is surrounded by undeveloped wilderness areas and touches the Manistee National Forest on it northern side.
As for fishing, Hamlin Lake offers some of the best - northern pike, muskie, bass, bluegill, crappie, perch and hundreds of thousands of walleye which were intentionally stocked. In winter, Hamlin Lake usually freezes offering a perfect spot for ice fishing
Spots along the frozen lake are cleared and maintained for ice skating and the many miles of hiking trails become the perfect cross-country skiing venues through the park. Hamlin Lake can certainly be fairly called "a lake for all seasons" which is its tourism motto.
